Toilet repair, and the two symptoms that are not about the toilet at all

What fails inside a toilet, underneath it, and downstream of it are three unrelated systems, and a caller’s description of the symptom rarely points at which one is actually to blame.

Is it really worth fixing a toilet that just keeps running?

Yes, and the reason is almost mechanical: a flapper or fill valve that refuses to seat lets the tank refill over and over, and since that water exits straight through the drain, nothing pools, nothing stains, and nothing announces itself except a faint sound after the house goes quiet. Few household failures run around the clock while leaving this little trace, and the part responsible for it is almost always inexpensive.

Two of the other common complaints have nothing to do with the toilet itself. Rocking means the floor seal has given way and the flange beneath it no longer holds a tight connection, so moisture has been finding its way under the base instead of down the pipe, and on a slab, that moisture has had to go somewhere all along.

And when it backs up only while another fixture runs, the toilet is not malfunctioning at all. It is relaying a message from the shared drain line, which is where to actually look.

What five common toilet complaints are actually telling you

Only two of the five are actually fixed inside the tank.

The tank refills on its own, unprompted
The flapper is not seating fully. Water keeps passing from the tank into the bowl, which is exactly why the fill valve keeps topping the tank back up.
A flush that feels weak or incomplete
Sometimes the tank stops short of its proper fill line, and sometimes the rim holes have scaled over from years of mineral-heavy water. Either way, this is usually a cleaning and adjustment visit, not a reason for a new toilet.
There is a wobble when you sit down
Something underneath has given way, either the wax seal or the flange itself, and water has had an opening to escape through. How long that has been going on matters far more than the wobble does.
It backs up whenever the shower runs
That is the shared line speaking, not the toilet. Two fixtures reporting the same problem at once means the restriction sits downstream of both of them.
A smell that lingers around the base
A wax seal has failed, letting sewer gas past it. That is a different problem from a blockage, and nothing poured into the bowl will solve it.

Straight answers before you call

Does a running toilet count as an emergency?

It will not flood the room, so it is not urgent in that sense, but it is quietly wasting water around the clock, and the fix is nearly always a cheap part. Very few plumbing problems make such a clear case that delay is the expensive option.

The toilet rocks. Can the floor bolts just be tightened?

Cranking the bolts down on a toilet that is rocking because of a failed seal or a broken flange is a good way to crack the porcelain. The wobble is only a symptom. What actually matters is figuring out how long moisture has been slipping underneath it.

Is a rocking or running toilet worth repairing, or replacing?

In the great majority of cases, repair wins. Flappers, fill valves, wax seals and flanges can all be swapped out on their own. Replacement earns its place once the bowl itself has cracked, or once a toilet has already needed two or three separate fixes and shows no sign of settling down.

Why does the toilet back up only when the washing machine is running?

The two fixtures are feeding into a line that cannot carry both loads simultaneously, which means the obstruction sits downstream of the connection they share rather than inside either appliance. That calls for tracing the drain itself, and a camera is normally how it gets settled.
