Is a permit actually required for gas line work in Florida?

Yes, for anything past swapping a direct appliance connection. Florida Building Code calls for a licensed gas contractor, a pulled permit, and a finished installation that passes both a pressure test and a licensed inspection before the gas is switched back on. That test and inspection happen first, not afterward, and skipping the order is treated the same as skipping it entirely.

Propane sits under a separate framework entirely, licensed at the business level by the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, covering whoever installs, services or repairs LP tanks and systems. LP storage itself is built to the Florida Fire Prevention Code and NFPA 58, apart from the fuel gas code that governs the piping.

A homeowner rarely deals with any of that directly. The contractor works out what the local building department requires, pulls the permit, and books the inspections as part of the job.

Switching a water heater or range over to gas
A new run, a new shutoff and a new connection point turn this into permitted, pressure-tested, inspected work, not a same-afternoon appliance swap.
Adding a branch for another appliance
Add any new fixture, whether that is a backyard kitchen, a pool heater, a standby generator or a gas dryer, and the sizing of the whole system changes, which is exactly what gets checked at inspection.
There’s a smell of gas in the house
That isn’t something to schedule around. Get everyone out, leave every switch alone, and call once you’re clear of the building. Finding it means a pressure test, never sniffing along the pipe.
Pipe that looks corroded or damaged
Salt air is just as hard on exposed gas pipe as it is on everything else outside here. A run that looks rough at the meter deserves testing, not watching.
A sale, refinance or insurance requirement
